Comparing My Country and Waratah and Wattle
When analysing the poems “Waratah and Wattle” and “My Country”, there were many contrasts between the two. Henry Lawson’s
“Waratah and Wattle” has portrayed his absolute love and pride for his country and land. While in Mackellar’s “My Country” has portrayed Australia as her adopted country with its untamed landscape and sweeping vistas and tells why she turned her back on the ordered landscape of England only to embrace the rugged, pitiless country of Australia.
However both poems seem to take you on a captivating journey with an imaginative portrayal of the Australian landscape.
Mackellar and Lawson use words such as “her” and “she” to personify Australia and to show their strong love and affection for the Australian landscape. Both poems are similar as the poets tend to compare to Australia. Henry is comparing emblems of other countries to Australia, whereas Mackellar is comparing another country, in this case England, to Australia. These comparisons highlight the uniqueness of Australian landscape.
Both poems are beautifully crafted with endearing descriptions of the country they loved with its cruel and dark landscape that captivates the reader and takes them on a journey through their imaginative portrayal of the Australian landscape.
